Back to the Grindstone

Well, I think we can say that the festive season is now well and truly over. The days of eating too much good food, drinking too much fine drink, and regretting both the day after, seem to belong to a distant past. At least we can hang on to the memory of the snowy landscapes, open fires and lack of natural disasters as we head into the perpetually dreary month of January.

I’ve now been back in France for a week or so, and am psyching myself for my first week of real work. Thanks to an organised ski trip by the ever-resourceful Bureau des Elèves, the school shut down on wednesday evening, and I’ve been enjoying the weekend ever since. Of course the prospects of a project to start, a dissertation to write and a job to find can wait until next week.

The one thing I have achieved, however, is to learn to understand french people again - a vital skill which seemed to disappear over the christmas holidays. The lecturer of my new networks course seems amazingly engaging and comprehnsible. I’m just waiting for them to wheel out the baffle-the-foreigners teacher, a character trait which seems common to at least one employee of every department.

But perhaps, during the annual post-christmas lull, we all need something to keep us on our toes anyway.
